Day 1:
Once camp was set up, we packed up a bag and headed into the venue to see hear some tunes. The festival started with a bang! We walked a few blocks from our site and found ourselves on the beach! The main stage was about 300 ft from the Long Island Sound. We got to stand next to the ocean as we waited in line to get to the stage. All around the stages there was a carnival set up. WIth games, vendors, and a ferris wheel. We settled into a good spot to the left of the stage. Where we always sit. Jess grabbed a few Vibes Brew beers. They had their own beer for the festival. Lane got a few slices of pizza. We got comfy on the dancing blanket and the festival was under way. We heard Yonder Mountain String Band and Dark Star Orchestra. Dark Star is a Grateful Dead Cover band that replicates full dead shows. They did a show from 1989 and played some of our favorites. There were a few late night bands, but we were tired so we headed back to the site where we could still hear the bands on the main stage. We laid on the outside air mattress, under the patio tent and fell asleep to The Royal Family Ball featuring Lettuce and Soulive.
Day 2:
Woke up to rain falling on the tent. Jess put on his poncho and went outside to make everything safe, make some coffee and some breakfast. Sausage scramble and toast.
The rain let up for a few hours while Jess made breakfast. Perfect timing. The rain started about 5 minutes after Lane cleaned up. The rest of the day it rained. Hard. We came prepared for the rain, so nothing got real wet. We drank mimosas and lazied around for the rest of the day. The festival also had a live radio station playing the main stage live. So we got to sit in the tent and listen to Assembly of Dust and 7 Walkers Featuring Billy Krutzmann. The rain let up around 4pm and we hopped up, made some grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for Lane. Packed up a bag and headed out to the stage. The rain stopped completely by the time Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby came on. We sat in our usual spot, and heard Phil Lesh and Friends. Phil played until 3am and we had to listen to the last couple of tunes from the outside air mattress and fell asleep listening to Phil.
Day 3
The sun was shining bright on Saturday morning. Jess made coffee and bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches. We headed to the stage a little earlier this morning because Zappa Plays Zappa started at 1pm. The sun was shinning and it was hot so we were sweating it out during Zappa. We went to the beach and jumped in to cool off after the early show. After we enjoyed the beach breeze for a few, we went back to the site and Jess cooked sausage and peppers sandwiches, good even on a hot day. After we filled our bellies and had a beer or two we headed back to the stage for Micky Heart Band and Strangefolk Reunion. After the shows Lane needed some Chinese food and Jess grabbed a burger. A long day dancing in the sun made us very tired, so we decided to catch the night shows back at the patio tent. We tried our best to stay awake for Primus and Sound Tribe Sector 9, but we could not. We are getting old. We hit the hay around 9:30 pm.
Day 4
Last day of the festival. We got up a little earlier Sunday morning because Keller Williams started at noon, and we needed to start packing up our stuff. We had a quick Egg sammy for breakfast, and headed out. Keller put on a great show. After Keller we headed back to the site to finish packing up. This festival makes you leave Sunday night after all the shows. We spent some of the afternoon packing up and eating a last grilled cheese sandwich. Once the car was loaded we headed back to the stage to catch some afternoon shows. We blew it on the schedule and missed Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO), which is a bummer because they are super good. We did get to sit by the ocean and catch Tubob Krewe. The last show of the festival was the Avett Brothers. They were a great way to end this awesome weekend. They jammed until the sun set on the Gathering of the Vibes. We took one last look at the Long Island Sound and headed for the car. It was already packed up which was nice. We almost screwed up and lost track of time when it came to picking up Leon, but we got lucky and someone from the boarding place stayed late for other customers. We scooped him up and headed for Maine. Maine! Lane has always wanted to go to visit. Even as a kid she daydreamed of living there one day. Portland, ME is about 5 hours from Bridgeport, CT, so we had a few cups of coffee, Jess put his driving hat on and we made it to our hotel around 1:30 am. We both took a much needed shower, snuggled up with Leon on the bed and slept.
