Day 1
The drive through the mountains into Utah was beautiful. We drove along the Colorado River nearly the whole way. We even stopped next to it in western Colorado and had a picnic. The drive through Utah was unreal. The desert in the early evening is breathtaking. We got to our camp around 7pm. That turned out to be good timing because the temps during the day were around 100. Those of you in Oklahoma, feel free to guff. We set up camp and drove out to Dead Horse Point. The name comes from 3000 horses that were led there and died from thirst because they could see but not reach the Colorado River 2000 ft below. We walked around the point until the sun went down and went back to camp. We tried to cook as much food as we could because this was our last night of the trip. Weird. We had grilled turkey and cheese sammies and some spaghettios with peanut butter s’mores for dessert. We sat next to our tent and read for a while before bed.
so scary!
Day 2
We woke up and took an amazing 3 mile hike early on our last day of adventuring. It was a perfect send off. We hiked out on a point and the views were unreal. We got back to the site and cooked our last breakfast. We packed everything up except our grill. After two long road trips and a few music festivals and camping trips in between, we felt like it was time to let the little guy go. It was time. So, it was put out to pasture in Utah. We wanted to get back to LA by the end of the night, but before we left we wanted to get a good look at Moab and the famous Arches. We drove through Arches National Park, and you could see plenty of sites from the car which was nice since it was a hot one! We started heading west again around 12:30.
We were both sad to admit that our 6-week adventure that we had dreamed about, planned for, and been looking forward to for the previous year was actually over. On one hand we were eager to get back to the comforts of home and our LA friends (we missed them so much!), but on the other hand it meant our carefree, adventure filled trip was over and...wait for it...WORK was right around the corner. It was a surreal and sad feeling. Some of our first stops like Indian Tacos in NM and seeing our family in OK seemed so, so long ago! We tried to reflect and wrap our mind around this crazy trip. We had so many life experiences in such a short amount of time. We were proud of ourselves for keeping up our adventurers’ mindset the entire trip and trying to fully experience each place we stopped. We joked about telling our kids someday, “Well, son (or daughter), when your mother and I drove cross country (fill in with some awesome story here)”.
It will definitely be a time we remember for the rest of our lives!
