12 Hikes in 12 Months: #4

4.  Santa Ynez Trail, Topanga State Park, Topanga, CA

Way back at the beginning of June we went on our fourth hike of our 12 hikes in 12 months for 2014…and we haven't been on one since (unless you count Jess and I's hike around the lake in the rain at Kanuga). Needless to say, we are a little behind, so we better get busy this fall!

We love Topanga!  It is just north of LA, nestled in the mountains between Malibu/pacific palisades and the valley.  It has a real hippie vibe and is surrounded by a state park.  You feel like you're in the middle of nowhere just minutes outside the city.  We were excited to do some hiking in Topanga!

We chose the Santa Ynez trail with a glimmer of a hope to see a waterfall.  We knew that was wishful thinking considering the massive drought we are in right now!

 hello wide open spaces!

It was a cloudy cool start to the day which was so nice after all the hot weather we have been having.

 poor attempt at a panorama
starting to get hot now!  the sun shade also protects her from rogue branches

We got about 50 feet from what would have been the waterfall…there was poison ivy EVERYWHERE with warning signs along the path.  we made the decision to turn back short of the waterfall, but we are guessing there was actually no water.

We saw this GIANT monarch on our way back.

The route back was entirely uphill…pretty steep.  It kicked jess and I's butts, but B had a nice little snooze.

We did it!  We took a water break under a tree before heading out.

T'was a good day.  Now to plan #5!!
