15 month letter

Dear Nuggalicious,
It's official.  You have graduated from babyhood to toddlerhood.  This month has been such a huge month of development for you.  You learn things so quickly, and you are doing something new several times a DAY!  Your big personality is shining through more than ever.  It has been a fun month getting to watch you develop into a sweet, gentle, sassy, precocious, funny, curious, smart, adventurous, and loving little girl.  I am no longer sad about losing my baby.  I wake up excited to see what new thing you are going to do.  Sometimes it feels more like we are "hanging out" together.  I like to sit back and watch you explore, use your imagination and figure things out.  You are a quick learner and you are understanding much more of the world and how it works.  You will cock your head to the left when you are thinking about something.  You like to clean things, load/unload the dishwasher, pretend drive, carry a purse, "cook" with tupperware, pick out your clothes, wear our shoes and try to put yours on your feet, etc.

In fact, I am pretty sure you understand everything your daddy and I say.  You try your best to communicate with us.  Your cousin, Felix, taught you how to do the sign language for "please" while we were at camp Kanuga (rub belly with both hands).  You do this all the time when asking for something.  It is very cute.  If you forget, we will say "use your words" and you will rub your belly and say "puh" which is, of course, please.  Since starting Please sign language, you have quit doing "milk" sign language.  You have said a lot of words once.  Here are the staples/repeats in your vocab right now:  mama, dada, bubba, ball (ba),  down (says down for both up and down…doooooowwwn), yes, (yesh), night night (nigh nigh), whoa, butt (buh), poop, moon (boon), papa, nana (for Janet), nana (natalie), Isla (I-uh), no no no (never says it just once), crah (crotch), bye.  You have rediscovered your Who Loves Breckin? book and it has become a recent favorite.

You have started to have tiny fits of rage.  I try not to laugh, but you look so cute and funny when you do it.  Your little hands ball up into the tiniest fists.  You love to be outside. Naked.  You love your plastic swimming pool (even when there is no water in it!) and playing with the hose.  You love climbing up and going down the slide.  You like to sit on the bench in the garden while I water. We have started the game, "how fast can you run to the garden fence and back.  This keeps you entertained for awhile.  We have started creating a play space for you in the side yard, and you will walk back there by yourself sometimes and play.  You love to go up and down the patio stoop in the front and back yard.  You are very good on steps.  You are safe and will grab the railing with one hand.  You and Leon remain best buddies.  You will often hug and kiss on him.  You also love to sit on him or lean back and lounge on him (and he usually lets you!).  You have enjoyed playing fetch with Leon and his tennis ball.  He will not let go of the ball for anyone else but you!  And you have got quite an arm on you!

You are really into balls this month.  It has become one of your favorite words to say too.  Anything round or circular in shape is a "bah".  Another favorite has been your wooden wagon that holds your blocks.  You will pile up your toys or your snacks onto the wagon and pull it by the string all around the house.  You love cars/things with wheels.  You love to go through the baking sheet/tupperware cabinet.  You like to take the things from the cabinet and pile them under your highchair.  not sure what this is about.  You colored with colored pencils for the first time and played with some homemade play dough.  They both held your interest for a couple of minutes.  You are into books now more than ever! It is actually quite exhausting.  On some days, we have to force you into a different activity b/c you will just keep bringing us book after book after book.  Sometimes you will crawl up onto the couch or your rocking chair and read independently, but you usually want us to read the book to you. There are some that are your favorites that I think daddy and I definitely have memorized.  Good Night Little Bear,  Hippos Go Berserk! (you turn to the berserk page of the book and start going crazy like the hippos),  Disney Princess book (we haven't been able to find this one recently and I am not that sad about it),  and all of your Baby Bug magazines.  You can do the hand motions to Hanky Panky (you know…where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky).  You like to clap, period.  When you hear applause you clap along.  You clap and stomp while you dance.  Your dancing is just about the best thing I have ever seen.  You really get your groove on.  You will feel the music by swaying and shaking your head.  Sometimes you will hold one finger up and shake it back and forth.  You love to spin in circles. You have even started trying to snap your fingers.   We listen to a lot of records and you love to turn up the volume.  You seem to really like Bob Dylan lately.  You can even play the harmonica along with the record!  (and the kazoo and ukelele…) You have even started singing along to the songs (not actual words but humming).  Sometimes you will start humming a tune just out of the blue.  You've got a song in your heart little love.

You can point to yours or other people's eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair, bellybuttons, and butts.  Odd, yes, but you are really into butts, poop and crotches right now.  You will help me in the backyard with picking up Leon's poop by finding piles, pointing to them, and saying "poop".   You are very expressive with your face.  You sometimes look very serious.  I love when you put your mouth into a little "o" and raise your eyebrows as if to say, "whoa…that was crazy".  You stick your tongue out. You shake your head back and forth for no. You high five.  You still like to tell people you are "1 year old" by holding up one finger.  You can also make a "gun" with your hand to say "go pokes!" (we are working on waving the wheat).  You like to put my phone up to your ear and pretend to have a conversation.  One day, you had at least a 15 minute "conversation" where you walked around the house talking gibberish into the phone and cracking up laughing with nobody on the other end.  You will often call Siri (the iPhone robot) and confuse her.  She will talk back to you with suggestions of things you can ask her.  iPhone 6 was just released.  I wonder what iPhone generation it will be when you read this...

You have started to crawl up into chairs or onto the couch for a short lounge.  You will kick back, sometimes with a snack or a water, and relax for a few minutes.  We go on a lot of walks in your stroller around the neighborhood.  You like the park but usually end up wanting to play with other people's strollers (especially the ones that look like cars).  You like to eat a snack in your stroller and prop your feet up.  Sometimes you will actually walk on our walks.  You are still a good eater.  Your faves lately:  cheese, pretzels, meat, bread, blueberries, beans, peanut butter, smoothies…You had my chicken and dumps (your Gaga's recipe) for the first time and loved it!  You insist on using a spoon and fork.  You like to stab your food with your fork and you are so proud of yourself when you can get more than one piece of food on your fork at a time.  You still love to nurse.  You have a big nursing session in the morning, before your nap, and bed.  Just periodically throughout the day.  You are very much not ready to stop though.  It is pretty funny how excited you get when you see my boob.  You will squeal with delight and nose dive into my chest.

You saw the Zombies live in concert at the Santa Monica Pier!  We had many other trips to the beach this month too. It has been so hot!  You love the beach and the ocean.  You like to run as fast as you can into the water and chase the waves.  We are in the middle of a major heat wave on top of a drought.  This is one reason you are naked most of the time.

You love to lean back on the couch and lay like this.  You are watching the US Open here =)

We have had lots of playdates with Wilder.  He is your best bud.  We went on a walk yesterday with Wilder and you two were holding hands from your strollers.  It was the cutest thing ever!!

An example of your creative problem solving.

There were just so many things that happened this month.  You make me so proud to be your mama daily.  I try to remember every moment and cute thing that you do because tomorrow it is all going to be different.  One moment that stands out the most was the other morning.  You had come in our bed around 4 in the morning (which is rare these days…you generally sleep until 6/6:30).  You fell back asleep with us and a couple of hours later I was woken up…not by a crying baby or a hungry baby…but by your sweet kisses and hugs.   I am tearing up just thinking about it.  It was one of the best moments of my life.  We love you so much, little bean.

Love,
 Mommy and Daddy
