July 6: Memphis, Tennessee

We woke up early and packed the car. We were ready to head east again.  The five days that we spent at Grand Lake was the longest stretch for Jess in 6 years.  It still went by fast.  We soaked up too much sun, hung out with family, and had a great time.  We love lake!.  After tearful goodbyes we headed back to I-40 via the scenic route through Arkansas. (A Civil War Trail & The Trail of Tears)  We stopped in Jay to grab a couple of Bacon, egg and cheeses then, put some miles behind us.  We zig zagged through the Ozark Mountains. What a view!  We Stopped to buy some local Huckleberry Jam and left Arkansas behind us.
We drove hard to get to Memphis by 6 PM.

We set up camp, had a few beers, and relaxed for few minutes.  For dinner we made Cowboy Casserole.  We cooked bacon, beans, ground beef, and onions topped off by 5 biscuits.  We let that cook for about 25 minutes (We threw the b as the sun went down while we waited on dinner).  It turned out delicious.  We ate until we were stuffed.  While we were eating a camp ranger came by and told us to get ready for a rainstorm.  We put everything away. It did not rain a drop. Thanks lady.  After dinner the three of us took off for Beale St.

We have heard about how much fun it is to go out for drinks and listen to live blues in this area.  We had no idea how cool this part of Memphis was.  We found a place to park super close.  The parking lot attendant became fast friends. On Beale St. they block off the street on both ends of the strip and turn the whole place into a block party.  We quickly grabbed a few Buds from a curbside bartender and started to explore.  There was blues coming from all directions as we walked up and down Beale.  We stood and watched a few outdoor bluesmen do their thing until we decided to go spit in the river for good luck.  We walked a few blocks and got to the “riverside”.  Only about a football field away from the water.  We shrugged that small failure off and headed back to Beale.  We stepped into a great little blues spot and caught a band called “The Brandon Santini Band” Had one more beer and headed back to the campsite.  It was pretty late when we got back, so we just hit the hay.

We woke up moving a little slow. Jess made some coffee, which Lane spilled on herself, causing a burn.  After she recovered we went for a walk down to the river.  Or so we though.  The sign at the camp, as well as the camp map made it look as though the river was just down the road. Well, it wasn’t.  We walked about 2 miles down the road before deciding to turn back.  Good thing we did.  We got in the car and drove down to the river before we left.  It was about a 25 minute drive. But, we got to spit in the river. Luck all around us. When we got back from our hike, we cooked a big breakfast of bacon, eggs, onion, and potatoes. Yum!  Then we headed for Asheville.
