July 7-9: Asheville, North Carolina

It was about 12:00 when we were packed up and headed out of Memphis.  We wanted to make Nashville for lunch, that did not happen.  We were dead set on having some good Nashville BBQ so we got some road snacks and pushed through.  Around 4:30 we got to Witt’s BBQ.  It is famous in Nashville. Lane got a baked potato, loaded with pork.  Jess ordered a pork sandwich.  No BBQ sauce here, just plain delicious.  We found a park to sit and eat while Leon got to stretch his legs.
With full bellies we jumped back on I-40 east for a short 5 hour drive to Asheville.  Lane helped with the driving.  She put in about 35 miles.  As soon as she got in the drivers seat, the sun went down, the traffic came up, and the sharp, mountain turns were plentiful.  After Jess took back over we had a little trouble finding the campsite.  Once things got cleared up, we made it to our site around 11:00.  We threw up our tent, blew up the mattress and hit the hay...Hard.

The next morning Jess woke up early and set up camp while Lane got some much needed extra z’s.  The site was amazing.  Hidden from all the other sites and close to the swimming beach.  We got a chance to set up our hammock (thanks Clint and Ka), and our shade/anti bug shelter.  You might say that sounds like a little much for 2 people for a short stay.  We glamp. (Glamour Camp)

Once we both had a few cups of coffee, we went for a hike down to the swim beach.  No dogs allowed on the beach so Jess sat under a tree while Lane cooled off and vice versa.  When we got back to our site we cooked another great breakfast.  Eggs, ground beef, onions, and potatoes. Lane tried out a new recipe she found for campsite doughnuts.  Biscuit dough, butter, sugar, and cinnamon.  After a few attempts, got it down, and a bunch of them turned out perfect.

For the next few hours we relaxed and read while we enjoyed a few mimosas.  We sat in the shade protected from bugs with a fan on us. Perfect.
We decided to go explore Asheville a little for the afternoon.  We found a great spot called Village Wayside Bar and Grille.  They have great local beer and free internet.  We ordered a few and got all caught up.

The next day we lounged around our awesome site and read our books.  By 1:00 we had taken showers, ate some toast and jam and headed to downtown Asheville just as a storm was brewing.  We poked around at some downtown shops for about an hour.  We like Asheville!   It reminds us a lot of Boulder.  We headed to Charleston, stopped at Bojangle's for some quick chicken, and made it to Lane's cousin Polly's house around 7:00.
