7.14.08 Yellowstone

Lane writes:

*awoke around 9:30 to a beautiful breakfast that jess had prepared: scambies, bacon, toast, and orange juice. It was perfect.
*our campsite, Bay Bridge, was right on the Yellowstone lake. so pretty!
*We decided to get in the car to explore some of the park and look for wildlife. We went to the lower falls, which cuts into the grand canyon of yellowstone, and the upper falls. we saw 2 deer at the upper falls. We saw A LOT of bison. One even crossed the road right in front of us!!
*much different than Mt. Rainier. As Papa Shark would say "a lot of humanity". People everywhere!!
*Jess had bought a $20 dollar fishing pole when we stopped for groceries the night before. The whole drive from our campsite to the falls was along the Yellowstone river so we decided to find a good spot to pull over so he could test out his pole. I laid in the sun and read my book. No luck catching fish.
*We packed up and looked for places to fish around the lake. We found a nice picnic area, got the grill out (had to keep everything in the car because of the bears, so we had the food and cooking stuff with us). and we made some hot dogs.
*decided to go back to the campsite to get our comfy, backpack chairs, and went down to the lakeside by our camp. Found a beautiful spot with the rockies in the background. Jess fished (no nibbles) and I finished my book.
*Headed back to camp. Prepared a delicious hobo dinner complete with carrots, potatoes, onions, green peppers, and hamburger meat. Jess ate at least 3 servings and all his veggies!!! I love it when he eats his veggies =)
*We had a couple of smores on the campfire, and then headed to our campsite's amphitheater for a presentation on Bears. We never saw one why we were there =(
*Back to our site and got our campfire really roaring. It was pretty chilly at night. Drank a bottle of wine and hit the sack.

Let's learn about bears. 1. they will hunt whatever is the easiest catch, and will eat pretty much ANYTHING. that is why we cannot feed the bears anymore at yellowstone, b/c that would be the easiest hunt and unless people were feeding them they would lose the ability to hunt and starve. 2. grizzlies get their name from the grey "grizzle" on their backs. 3. grizzlies have a hump...black bears do not. 4. black bears climb trees. grizzlies usually do not. 4. The grizzlies cubs stay with their mamas up to 3 years. Black bear cubs have one winter with their mamas, then their on their own =(.

You did a great job recreating the pic. I can't believe you are on the very spot just 40 years later. It all looks beautiful.
